Kyle Howell, Visual Communications student on the San Francisco campus, recently designed an installation for the Macy's Flower Show, as part of a partnership FIDM has with Macy's.
Tell us about your experience: It was literally a rollercoaster ride! From concept to reality, it was a difficult, but highly rewarding journey. I'd like to thank FIDM and Macy's for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I truly appreciate it.
What was the biggest lesson learned? Managing my time effectively and meeting deadlines.
Would you recommend the Design Installation class? Oh definitely! This is the best experience I've had at FIDM so far because you get to show your skill sets for a real-life client.
Tell us a little about yourself: I'm 26 years old and currently live in Tracy, CA. I work as a visual merchandiser at the Bloomingdale's outlet store in Livermore, CA. In my free time, I love to watch old classic movies and reality shows. As a self-proclaimed foodie, I love to try new foods from various cultures.
How did you choose your major? I chose Visual Communications because my passion is visual merchandising. Also, a mentor of mine graduated from FIDM in L.A. with the same degree and she encouraged me to enroll.
What are your career goals? I see my career path heading towards a visual merchandising lead position for a department store or as a merchandise coordinator for a retail company. All the instructors at FIDM are industry professionals, so I really am learning from the best!
What advice do you have for someone thinking about going to FIDM? Stop thinking and just jump into it. I was hesitant before enrolling because I didn't think I was ready at the time. However, you can never truly be prepared for anything and the first step is doing it. Go with your instinct!
