Merchandising Students Tour Louis Vuitton X Exhibit and Beverly Hills Flagship Store

FIDM Instructor Susan Spencer took her Merchandising & Marketing students on a recent field trip to the Louis Vuitton flagship store and Louis Vuitton X, an immersive exhibition in Beverly Hills.

“I love taking my classes on field trips, as it puts theory into practice for my students,” said Susan Spencer. “We were extra lucky this time around to not only visit the West Coast flagship Louis Vuitton store, but also to be able to see the LV Experience pop-up store as well while it is in L.A.”

Spencer lectured on visual presentation strategies, and the students gained an understanding of the integration of in-store and mobile. They were also given a historical perspective, and saw first-hand how effective display converts customers to buy.

The students networked with key executives as they were treated to a private tour of the Beverly Hills “Maison,” led by Store Director Krista Allen, as well as a tour of Louis Vuitton X by LV Manager of Learning Development Aaron Schwab. They discussed the integration of technology and training, and the retail associate mobile app.

There are 10 rooms in the exhibition, each of which showcases a moment in LV history, from the iconic steamer trunks to designs from past and present creative directors.

The ArtyCapucines Collection is one of the highlights of the exhibit, and features reimagined bags by six global artists including Los Angeles-based Alex Israel and Jonas Wood. First launched in 2013, the line was named after rue des Capucines—the street on which Louis Vuitton first opened in 1854 in Paris.

In the Merchandise Presentation Strategies course, students learn how to develop effective product placement concepts across a variety of shopping platforms from in-store to electronic devices to increase customer satisfaction, drive sales, and increase profitability. Emphasis is also placed on how data is being used to enhance visual merchandising execution.
