Grad Holds 3 FIDM Degrees and Is Technical Designer at Young and Reckless

Krista Osborne earned three degrees from FIDM: Merchandise Product Development (2011), International Manufacturing and Product Development (2012), and Bachelor of Science in Business Management (2013). "I couldn't get enough of FIDM!" said Krista, now a Technical Designer at Young and Reckless, where she's been for the last three and a half years.

Tell us a little about yourself: I moved to Los Angeles from Arizona almost eight years ago to pursue my dreams in the fashion industry. I have a second job as a certified spinning instructor in Santa Monica. I am an identical twin and I have a Russian Blue kitty named Enzo.

Tell us about your work at Young and Reckless: I have been there for the last 3 1/2 years as a technical designer. I handle all technical design for both men's and women's international styles. I communicate daily with vendors overseas to ensure products are being made correctly and to my designers' liking. I also handle all men's and women's fittings where I am able to perfect the fit of the garments on live models.

How do you feel FIDM prepared you? I am proud to say FIDM prepared me 110% for my career! I felt confident when starting my career since FIDM provided me with an immense amount of knowledge in several different areas of the industry. I was able to learn how to make complete tech packs, spec garments and communicate using technical terms factories understand. I gained the knowledge of how to take a concept all the way through the production process and into the hands of the consumer.

How did you decide on your major?  I was originally enrolled in Fashion Design. A few weeks before moving to Los Angeles, I started researching more of the majors and decided that Product Development seemed more like something I wanted to do. I talked to my admissions advisor who also agreed, and I switched my major! I knew about IMPD the whole time I was in the Product Development program and it was my ultimate goal to be part of it. I worked really hard so I would be accepted and was beyond excited when I finally was! After completing the IMPD program I knew I wanted to get my Bachelor's degree so I completed that in a year at FIDM!

Looking back, which classes at FIDM were most valuable to you?  This is tough because I feel almost every single class was valuable for me. If I have to narrow it down, I would say my import/export class in the IMPD program provided me with extremely beneficial information. In the Product Development program the computer aided design classes as well as all of the textile classes really prepared me for my career.

Any advice for current FIDM Students?  Get involved on campus! During your time at FIDM there are so many different clubs and events to be a part of. These are great opportunities to meet and network with people who might help you out later on in the industry.

What is your biggest goal right now? My biggest goal right now is to work for Nike. I would also love to teach at FIDM one day!

Anything else you’d like to share? Never give up on your dreams. Hard work does pay off and nothing is impossible.
