Nicky Fletcher

We recently chatted with 17 year-old Haleiwa, Hawaii resident Nicky Fletcher, who will begin her FIDM career in the fall of 2019.

FIDM Major: Fashion Design

FIDM Campus and Start Date: I'm starting at the Orange County campus in the fall of 2019, then transferring to the LA campus.

Admissions Advisor: Susan Pope

How did your advisor help with the process? Susan contacted me long before I toured both the OC and LA campuses. She set up both tours for me, informed me of all possible majors I could be interested in, and told me everything I needed to know about FIDM and majoring in Fashion Design. She showed me around the OC campus and informed me of the Junior Advantage Program. If it weren't for her, I would probably be still making my portfolio to submit during senior year. Susan gladly helped me with every step of the way when I submitted my application and portfolio. She was so helpful throughout the process and still is.

Tell us a bit about yourself. I was born and raised on the North Shore of Oahu and fell in love with fashion design at a young age. I love surfing, swimming, hiking, and creating art! I love to sketch models, faces, and my designs. I love designing unique gowns and swimwear. I am obsessed with swimwear because living in Hawaii means I'm always in a bikini. I find inspiration in my surroundings, things I love, and in different concepts, not just physical things, but scents, movement, and feeling.

What are your proudest accomplishments so far? My proudest accomplishment would definitely be my acceptance to FIDM to major in Fashion Design. I am very proud of my portfolio and spent a lot of time creating it the way I envisioned. I am also proud to have been the winner of the Honolulu Magazine program called 'Reach the Runway,' where I was mentored by local fashion designers for a couple of months, and ended up winning the fashion design program.

What made FIDM right for you? I fell in love with FIDM when I finally had the opportunity to visit both the OC and LA campuses. I learned so much about the school, the curriculum, class size, and locations. I felt so welcomed at both campuses and was motivated by all the incredibly talented student work on the walls. Being around such creative and driven people make me so inspired and eager to design that much more.

What are your post-FIDM goals? After graduating FIDM with my bachelor's or master's degree, I want to design couture looks for my own clothing brand, or be able to design for a couture fashion brand.

What do you expect to learn at FIDM? I expect to learn so much at FIDM. I expect to learn about menswear, perfecting sewing and sketching, draping, and everything my classes will have to offer. I am also very excited to be able to work for companies and take on internships in the fashion industry that will allow me new experiences and opportunities. I'm also interested in even traveling with FIDM to learn about fashion somewhere new. Overall, I am so excited to be a part of FIDM and gain as much knowledge as I can.
