Instructor Has PhD in Mythological Studies

Gwenael Matos earned her Ph.D. in Mythological Studies, with a dissertation on Greek goddess fashion archetypes. She is currently at work turning her research into a book.

Do you have a particular style or philosophy about teaching?
Yes. I can’t successfully teach a student I don’t like. (I adapted this from my Master’s in counseling, where my mentor taught me you cannot effectively work with a client you don’t like. Applying this teaching philosophy has made me find the joy in teaching. I truly love what I do as a result of trying to find something wonderful about each student!)

What do you enjoy most about teaching at FIDM?
I’ve taught students of all ages from preschool to college. Most of us who teach have an age group that resonates with us. I have a passion for teaching young adults. I enjoy watching them develop not only as students, but as human beings, who have something meaningful to contribute to others. I also really appreciate and admire my colleagues. There is a generous, helpful spirit among faculty, staff, and the department chairs that I have rarely seen elsewhere. We all help each other, and we genuinely want each other and the school to succeed.

Gwenael Matos is an Outstanding Faculty Award Winner, an award given by the student body to outstanding faculty members.
