We're Here To Help

Going away to college is exciting, but it can be stressful as well. That's why we want to make the transition for your son or daughter as smooth as possible. FIDM provides free personal counseling services to assist students with any emotional, social, and learning problems that might affect their academic performance. Some of the services we initiate include:

  • Stress management counseling
  • Services for students with disabilities
  • New student/parent orientation
  • Assistance for academically at-risk students
  • Referrals to outside agencies, clinics, and therapists relating to issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, loss, relationship concerns, rape and assault, substance abuse, suicidal ideation, eating disorders, and other mental health concerns

All counseling sessions are completely confidential. To see a member of the Personal Counseling staff, make an appointment on the sign-up list outside the counselor's office.

Ten Tips for Surviving Your First Quarter of College

1. Know you're not alone. Who doesn't feel overwhelmed when they start college? New classes, new city, new roommates - it's a lot to take in. But be prepared for the likelihood of being stressed those first few months, you'll be better able to handle it.

2. Be organized. Get yourself some kind of organizer - a datebook, a PDA, even a big wall calendar, and use it to keep track of all your assignments and exams. (It feels good to cross things off, too.)

3. Make new friends. Try to meet as many people as you can in your classes. And exchange e-mail addresses with them so you can contact them for notes if you have to miss a class.

4. Get to know your instructors. You never know when they might be helpful down the road for letters of recommendation.

5. Take your projects seriously. No one enjoys doing "homework." But if you think of your projects as pieces for your portfolio, you'll feel more motivated, and your work will be better.

6. Stay healthy. Be sure to take care of yourself and take all the steps you possibly can to remain healthy.

7. Get involved in school. Join one of the on-campus clubs, or sign up with a committee to plan a school event. Look for flyers and announcements in the Student Activities Office, in the newsletter, and on the FIDM Portal.

8. Visit the Career Center. You should visit the Career Center as soon as you start college, so you know what opportunities await you. It's highly motivating for your studies when you have a dream career in mind.

9. Have fun. Studying is important, but putting your nose to the grindstone 24/7 will only burn you out. Don't forget to make time for yourself: go to the movies, hit the gym, go dancing, or read a good book. It's all about balance
