Just Accepted SF Merchandise Product Development Student Wants to Launch Her Own Streetwear Brand

April 4, 2016

Name: Emily Jackson

Age: 17

Hometown: San Ramon, CA

FIDM Major: Merchandise Product Development

FIDM Campus and Start Date: San Francisco, Fall 2016

Admissions Advisor: Laurel Gardner

How did your advisor help with the process? Laurel was actively involved with my admission process. From day one, she was there for me with all the questions my family and I had. She also helped me decide my major and I am so lucky to have her as my advisor.

Tell us a bit about yourself. Since I was a little girl I have used fashion to express myself. My style is very streetwear-inspired, but a majority of my closet is from thrift stores. I enjoy fabric shopping and sewing, and denim is my absolute favorite fabric to work with; I most commonly create recycled denim pieces.

What are your proudest accomplishments so far? During my sophomore year of high school, I interned at Nordstrom's BP Fashion Board. I enjoyed working with girls my age who had the same interests as me, and the internship gave me a taste of the industry.

What made FIDM right for you? After attending FIDM's Open House I knew immediately that this school was something special. It's very apparent that FIDM is a school where dreams become reality in this industry. The campus is beautiful and San Francisco is my favorite city.

Describe your entrance project. For my entrance project I developed a line for a H&M x Acne Studios collaboration. I took five of Acne Studios' coats, a very high-end contemporary brand, and redesigned them so that they could be sold for lesser quality and price at H&M.

What are your career goals? My ultimate goal is to be the designer and founder of my own streetwear brand. But to get there, I hope to have the most experience possible through travel, internships, and working for other brands/companies.

What do you expect to learn at FIDM? I expect to learn how to keep up in the fashion industry and how to stay relevant. I also expect to learn how to be the best I can be in my career and there is no doubt that FIDM will exceed my expectations.
