Zayne Maeda is now a Merchandise Manager at Petco, where she is a one of the merchants for Aquatic Supplies. We recently talked with the FIDM Grad to learn more about her new job.
How did your new job at PETCO come about? I’ve always wanted to be in the pet industry and was at a point in my life where I was ready to relocate and looking for my next career challenge and adventure. I just moved to Ramona – a very small country town in East San Diego County. It’s the perfect mix of close-to-the-city and rural-living.
What have you been up to since graduation? I interned with Disney Stores in their allocation department right after graduation (I actually got the interview through the FIDM Career Fair) then found a full-time job in the fashion industry as an allocation analyst once my internship ended. From there I was lucky enough to secure a merchandising position at Trader Joe’s and realized my passion for the merchant side of the business.
How did FIDM help prepare you for your career? One of the best things I remember about FIDM was an instructor that advised the class to treat our time at FIDM as our career. Show up on time, perform your assignments to the best of your ability, and always remain professional, just as you would at work. Another great piece of advice from an instructor was to never burn bridges – you never who your path will cross in the future.
What are your ultimate career goals? I want to continue to be passionate about the work that I’m doing; I truly love coming to work everyday and I’ve been extremely confident in all of the career choices that I have made thus far. I feel very lucky to be passionate about the position I’m in, the product I’m working with, and the company I’m working for. I am loving the pet industry – it’s everything I knew it would be.
