The little stretch of shops and coffee houses just north of Sunset on Echo Park Avenue feels like a set designed for an indie film starring this season’s pixie girl. The shops are all independent; and the vibe on a sunny weekday afternoon is 21st century urban utopia. Dads with wooly beards are feeding happy babies organic hummus.
The walking tour included cu shops—a quirky gift shop with letterpress stationery, the world’s smallest green grocer with locally sourced veggies, French quotes on the wall and delicious sandwiches, and a vintage boutique that looks like it was curated by a ringletted rock n roll groupie circa 1968. Parking on this small stretch is easy; the sidewalks are lined with benches for seating; and the downtown campus is 15 minutes away. Buses run on Sunset, if you want to take public transportation.
The pioneer on the block is the vintage treasure chest called Tavin. A modern gypsy caravan chockfull of white lace Victoriana, tiny ‘60s motorcycle jackets, flowy ethnic caftans, collector’s shoes and accessories, the stock is painstakingly curated and preserved. A favorite of stylists and costumers in search of 60s and 70s designer pieces but make an appointment if you need attention. This shop is tiny.

Cookbook is a small store with a heart of gold. All the gorgeous food—produce, meats, chicken potpies, frozen cookie dough, hummus—is responsibly grown, most is locally sourced and the service is friendly. The shop design and concept feels very personal.
