    January

     1. FIDM Class of 2016 IMPD Students Travel to Hong Kong 

    FIDM International Manufacturing & Product Development students had the opportunity to travel to Hong Kong in January for inspiration and a first-hand experience in sourcing and production. They captured some of their exciting moments on our Snapchat. See more of their trip here.

    2. FIDM Instagram Takeover with Merchandising & Marketing Grad Haley Vest

    Style blogger and Merchandising & Marketing Graduate Haley Vest took over our Instagram account in January to share some insight on how to look your best when dressing for an interview or a regular day on the job. Read more here

    3. Academy Award Winning Costume Designer Colleen Atwood Visits FIDM

    Academy Award-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood’s visit to FIDM was nothing short of amazing. She gave insight to our students — many of which happened to be aspiring costume designers themselves — about her career and success in the entertainment industry. Some of her film credits include “Chicago,” “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” Tim Burton’s “Alice In Wonderland,” “Into the Woods,” and many more.     4. FIDM Grad and Former Pretty Little Liars Costume Designer Mandi Line Visits FIDM

    You might have seen her work on ABC Family’s “Pretty Little Liars” and MTV’s “Faking It,” or her put-together looks worn by A-list celebrities Jared Leto and Lucy Hale, but did you know that costume designer/celebrity stylist Mandi Line is also a graduate of FIDM’s Merchandise Product Development program?     5.  “Project Runway: Junior” Winner Announced 

    Maya Ramirez was the first-ever winner of “Project Runway: Junior” and recipient of a full scholarship to FIDM! 

    6. FIDM Film & TV Costume Design Students Attend the 2016 Costume Designers Guild Awards to Show Off Their Work

    Every year our Film & TV Costume Design students have the opportunity to collaborate with the CDGA and Lacoste to re-imagine their classic polo. In 2016, the students were challenged to design looks inspired by Quentin Tarantino films. The students were also invited to attend the Costume Designers Guild (CDG) Awards in Los Angeles where their designs were on display, and where Tarantino was honored along with actress Cate Blanchett. 

    7. Opening of the FIDM Museum’s 24th Annual “Art of Motion Picture Costume Design” Exhibition

    Representing the past year in cinema, over 90 outstanding costume designs from 23 films were seen in the FIDM Museum’s 24th annual “Art of Motion Picture Costume Design” exhibition. Within this exhibition, all five Academy Award nominees for costume design were featured. See inside the exhibition here.

    8. Behind-The-Scenes With Avery Dennison: The Heat Transfer Process

    IMPD Class of 2016 student Adam Rosenthal captured his trip to Avery Dennison’s LA Customer & Innovation Design Center, on FIDM’s Instagram page in March. Through this takeover, he relayed his journey of collaborating, brainstorming, placing artwork, and sampling to our Instagram community. See it all here. 

    9. FIDM Fashion Club & Adidas Collaborate to Create “The Future Issue” 

    In partnership with Adidas Originals, ten FIDM Fashion Club presidents were invited to NYC to be on set with iconic stylist Zanna Roberts Rassi to style "The Future Issue" – the brands' Women's Tubular and NMD S/S '16 lookbook. 

    10. Founder of Anastasia Speaks to FIDM Students 

    Beauty Pioneer, Creative Visionary and Powerhouse Entrepreneur Anastasia Soare, spoke at FIDM in March to share her success story of humble beginnings to massive fame. Soare is founder, CEO and driving force behind Anastasia Beverly Hills—one of the fastest-growing brands in the global beauty industry. Known for her revolutionary “brow-shaping” service to clients—later patented as the “Golden Ratio” method—Soare has gone on to become a staple service and enduring new category in modern beauty. She has been featured in The New York Times, The Guardian, People, Vanity Fair, Vogue, Elle and Allure, among numerous other publications.  

    11. Class of 2016 IMPD Final Thesis Presentation With Silver Jeans 

    Every year, the hard work of our graduating International Manufacturing & Product Development Students is showcased in an exclusive exhibition for industry guests, FIDM Students and Grads! Class of 2016′s collaboration was with Silver Jeans Co., a Canadian-based denim brand whose denim products have become known as a must-have for those who demand a perfect fit. With their product-blending modern and vintage details, our IMPD students were challenged with integrating the urban and suburban lifestyles of the younger consumer to create a fashionable collection that would stay true to the history of Silver Jeans, Co.

    12. The 2016 FIDM DEBUT Runway Show Dazzles

    Hosted by successful FIDM Graduates and former Project Runway contestants Candice Cuoco and Nick Verreos, FIDM's Fashion Design and Theatre Costume Design Advanced Study Students debuted their collections at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. The FIDM DEBUT Runway Show also featured incredible work by Interior Design, Digital Media and Textile Design students. Don't miss out on DEBUT in April 2017.

    13. FIDM Students & Grads Set Trends at Coachella

    FIDM Grads and students were a part of the trend-setting atmosphere at Coachella. The FIDM Social Media team had the chance to interview style expert and FIDM Alumna Chelsea Richter about this year’s 13 key Coachella fashion and beauty trends here.

    14. FIDM Students Visit Iconic Denim Headquarters on the Denim Study Tour

    Merchandise Product Development and Merchandising & Marketing students were able to attend FIDM’s Denim Study Tour. This was an incredible opportunity for students to experience the ins-and-outs of the denim world with some of the most well-known brands in the industry: AG Jeans, GUESS, Current/Elliott, Splendid, Paige Denim, and TOMS. The best thing about it all? A big majority of it was captured on the ‘FIDMCollege’ Snapchat. See it here.

    15. “The Real” Art Director and FIDM Grad Martin Vallejo Gives FIDM a Tour of His Office at Warner Brothers

    FIDM Visual Communications Grad Martin Vallejo has quite the resume! He’s currently the art director for Fox’s “The Real” and has also worked as a Production/Set Designer for “Funny or Die,"Nerdist Productions, and PopSugar to name a few. FIDM Social Media visited Vallejo on site as his Warner Bros. office in May on the ‘FIDMCollege’ Snapchat account. In addition, he took over the FIDM Instagram account to give a behind-the-scenes look at a week in his life as an Art Director. Check out our full recap of it all here.

    16. FIDM Chairing Styles Scholarship Winners Visit Cotton Incorporated

    Chairing Styles 2016 scholarship winners – consisting of Textile DesignFashion Design, and Interior Design Students – had the opportunity to fly across the country to visit Cotton Inc. headquarters. In doing so, they were able to get a behind-the-scenes look at how one of the most iconic companies in the fashion industry produces its magic. They also had the opportunity to visit Se7en Inc. Textiles, Burlington Manufacturing Services and Quantum Group Inc. See more here.  

    17. Class of 2016 Celebrates at Graduation Carnival 

    Every year, Student Activities puts together an incredible event for the graduating class. The class of 2016′s celebration was the best one yet! 

    June

     18. FIDM is Named One of the “Top Fashion Schools in the World”

    Fashionista, a fashion news website, named FIDM one of the “25 Best Fashion Schools in the World” in 2016, saying, "A great vocational and design school for practical experience and they have an incredible career database for placement post-graduation — 90% of students who are in touch with the school report that they've found a job within six months of graduation. The top spot if you want to pursue costume design."

    19. Congratulations Class of 2016! 

    Graduation was a thrilling event for both students and their parents in 2016. It is always an incredible opportunity to celebrate a great accomplishment - earning a degree. The event was held at the STAPLES Center in Downtown LA and attended by more than 12,000 family and friends! 

    20. High School Students Start the First Three Days of Their Fashion Career

    Every year, our four FIDM Campuses in Orange County, San Diego, San Francisco and Los Angeles host the 3 Days of Fashion event. During this exciting time, high school students dive into the world of how to have a great career in Marketing, Social Media, Fashion Buying, Merchandising, Fashion Styling or Fashion Design by taking a series of workshops. Attendees were also able to meet fashion celebrities/FIDM Grads and hear how they built their careers. RSVP for 2017′s event here.

    21. FIDM Students Take on the Paris Summer Institute 

    Every year a group of FIDM Students get to experience living in the City of Lights for approximately two and a half weeks. During this time, they tour the city with a professor of fashion history, visit museums, and attend special appointments relating to the industries important to FIDM Students. Luckily, we got an inside look into 2016′s trip through Merchandising & Marketing Student, Sarah Harper. Check out her full recap here.  

    22. FIDM Graduates Create Magic at San Diego Comic Con’s Her Universe Fashion Show

    Fandoms unite! In July, FIDM’s Social Media team set out to San Diego Comic-Con to cover the Her Universe Fashion Show, a creative experience giving women the power to design costumes based off their favorite fandom. Of those designing costumes for the contest were FIDM Grads Lauren Andrews, Erica Angiuli, Martha Calderon, Carina LaViolette, Lydia Tachkov and Erica Williams. The winners of the fashion show collaborate with Her Universe Founder Ashley Eckstein to create a costume line for Hot Topic.     23. FIDM Tours BCBGMAXAZRIA’s Headquarters

    FIDM’s Social Media team had the chance to visit BCBGMAXAZRIA’s headquarters for a full tour. This company is home to a wide variety of the FIDM Family, by way of full-time positions or internships. BCBG’S West Coast College Relations Manager, Stephanie Gressley was kind enough to show them around this incredibly positive, unique and legendary location. See more here.

    24. Students and Industry Guests Learn About Sustainable Fashion in the GUESS Sustainability Course

    In partnership with GUESS, Inc., FIDM developed a sustainability course on “The Sustainable Product Lifecycle". Over the course of eight weeks, 15 selected students have been immersed in hands-on course work, labs and field trips to enable them to understand, create and analyze innovative practices aiming to reduce a product’s impact on the global environment. This complimentary eight-week course is a hybrid class including FIDM Students and GUESS employees. Read more here. 

    25. Opening of the FIDM Museum's 10th Annual “Art of Television Costume Design” Exhibition

    The FIDM Museum presented the 10th annual "Art of Television Costume Design" exhibition in August 2016. The exhibition featured more than 100 costumes from 23 television shows with eight being Emmy-nominated including "Game of Thrones," "American Horror Story: Hotel" and "Empire."

    26. FIDM Class of 2017 IMPD Students Collaborate with Nike and Visit Europe for Trend Research 

    The IMPD Advanced Study program teaches students about all phases of the product development cycle from the initial concept and design to technical design, global sourcing, costing, production and marketing to the consumer. During the course of their studies, students have the unique opportunity to study directly in Europe and Asia, as well as visit iconic locations around the USA in conjunction with the company they are collaborating with. This year’s collaboration is big - really big. FIDM IMPD Class of 2017 were paired with…..NIKE! With that, in 2016, they were able to visit Nike Headquarters in Oregon and venture into Paris and Milan for trend research. See more here. 

    27. FIDM Graduates Take on the Streets of New York Fashion Week

    New York Fashion Week is an integral part of the fashion industry. During this time, a plethora of incredible collections are hitting the runway. However, it always seems as if the true standouts are the bloggers and celebrities taking on NYC with their best street style looks. Some of those trendsetters are FIDM Graduates. See them here. 

    28. FIDM Visual Communications Students Collaborate with 99 Cents Only to Create Unique Masterpieces

    Our Visual Communications Students were tasked with creating fashionable pieces using products from only the 99 Cents Store. Students assembled into teams and worked together designing dresses meant to save. Their finished masterpieces were debuted at the Pico 99 Cents Only Store location. See more here.  

    29. FIDM DEBUT Graduate and Revolve Designer Speaks to the Premier Fashion Design Group

    Advanced Fashion Design Grad Eric Garcia went from designing a collection for FIDM DEBUT, to being the Assistant Designer for REVOLVE. The company is a massively popular online retailer that carries over 500 brands in addition to their own. Those brands include BCBGMAXAZRIA, Marc Jacobs, Wildfox Couture and Free People. Eric came to the FIDM Los Angeles in September to speak with the Premier Fashion Design group about his exciting career. See more here.

    30. FIDM Heads to Hot Topic Headquarters to Visit Graduates 

    Making its presence in the pop culture scene, Hot Topic has always been the place to purchase band, film and TV show apparel. FIDM Social Media was lucky enough to get an exclusive tour of Hot TopicBoxLunchTorrid and Lovesick headquarters. While there, we took over the DECA Inc. Snapchat account to give outstanding high school students the scoop on professional tips and pursuing a career at Hot Topic. In addition, we were able to interview successful FIDM Graduates.     31. Patagonia Employees Visit FIDM

    As the world changes, retailers are starting to reduce their carbon footprint by making eco-friendly fashion. One reputable brand Patagonia has always had a mission to make their clothing with a sustainable approach. Our Industry Club recently had a panel of Patagonia employees introduce students to the world of renewable fashion.  A few of these employees are FIDM Graduates.     32. FIDM Product Development and Merchandising & Marketing Students Tour LA’s Hottest Brands 

    The “LA’s Hottest Brands Tour” allows current students to visit the headquarters of the most iconic brands in the fashion industry. This year, a group of Merchandising & Marketing and Merchandise Product Development students visited the HQ of Patagonia, Hot Topic, BCBGMAXAZRIA, Fabletics, Sketchers and more. The FIDM Social Media team was lucky enough to attend and cover the day they visited Sketchers and Fabletics. See it here.

    33. "Project Runway" Season 15 Contestants Takeover FIDM’s Social Media 

    FIDM Alumnus and former “Project Runway” Season 15 Designer Dexter Simmons took over our “FIDMCollege” Snapchat to show a day in his fashion-filled life. Can we say lunching, embroideries, creativity… OH MY!?     34. Executives from L’Oreal Speak to FIDM Beauty Industry Students

    Our Beauty Industry Merchandising & Marketing major allows students to collaborate in order develop a new product or service and then present it to professionals from hair, makeup, fragrance and wellness companies.  During their time in this major, they are exposed to excellent guest speakers who are currently working in the field they aspire to be in. In November, executives from L’Oreal brands came to speak with beauty students about their work life in department stores and corporate. See more here.

    FIDM Instructors are unmatched in their expertise and their commitment to educating a new generation of professionals. Many of our instructors maintain dual careers: as FIDM Instructors and as active specialists in their fields.     36. Inside FIDM Grad Laverne Delgado-Small's Charitable Career

    Since her FIDM Graduation, Laverne Delgado-Small has used her expertise for philanthropy. She is now Executive Director of Freedom & Fashion, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering programs that mentor at-risk women and survivors of the sex trade. Annually, Freedom & Fashion gathers together an all star cast of mentors for their program including Grammy’s Makeup Artist Lisa Dempsey, BCBGMAXAZRIA Designer Caity Will, Celebrity Photographer Ryan West and many more. These mentors work with survivors by teaching them how to perfect their skills in the fashion industry, leading to REIGN, a fashion show about overcoming told by youth conquering homelessness, abuse and other injustices.     37. FIDM Graduates Eiman Hamza and Michael Scarpellini Run a Fashion Empire 

    FIDM Merchandising & Marketing Graduate Eiman Hamza owns Happiness Brand along with her husband and fellow FIDM Graduate Michael Scarpellini. In December, Eiman took over our “FIDMCollege” Snapchat to showcase a day in her busy life as a business owner. Click here to see it in action.
