Trendwatch: Kylie Jenner Gets Drop Retail

Gen Z shoppers in LA had a moment at Westfield's Topanga mall last Friday. Kylie Jenner, the most followed celebrity on Snapchat, dropped her holiday merchandise into a one-of-a kind boutique at the upscale suburban mall and shoppers did what they had to do. Young shoppers excited by "a product's rarity, and the credibility owning that product can give them on social media, as well as its possible resale value," dropped and spent big according the New York Times. "Drop" retail switches paradigms by making a limited number of products available for a short time, thereby increasing social media status for consumers who can post a selfie with said items. Shoppers at the Kylie pop-up had 15 minutes in the store and a limited number of items they could purchase, thereby increasing resale value. And adding drama to online sharing.
