I encourage students to give speeches on subjects they really care about, and they respond with truly inspirational presentations!”
A former Peace Corps volunteer and member of the Navy, Robert Opliger specializes in training public speakers. Opliger teaches Effective Speaking and English Composition at the San Diego campus and has been an active member of Toastmasters International for over 20 years.
Can you tell us about your life outside of FIDM?
I’m a yoga instructor and I’ll be starting a yoga class on the San Diego campus. I also love going on walks, surfing, long distance running, hiking, backpacking, camping, fishing, and gardening. I meditate every day.
How would you describe your teaching style?
I have changed my style at FIDM to use more interactive assignments and fewer class lectures. This gives the students more opportunities to develop their confidence as public speakers.
Robert Opliger is an Outstanding Faculty Award Winner, an award given by the student body to outstanding faculty members.
