FIDM Faces

Larry Spears

Faculty
General Studies

I believe in providing a supportive environment for my students to construct their own understanding of the subjects I teach.”

Larry Spears moved to San Francisco from Scotland 20 years ago to pursue a multi-faceted career in the arts, electronics, and education. He started and ran an influential small theatre company called Viaduct in the Bay area in the ‘90s. These days, in addition to teaching in the Associates and Bachelor’s program at FIDM, he teaches Western Sciences in a Master’s program in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

What do you enjoy most about teaching at FIDM?
Since I teach General Studies in the A.A. programs as well as the Bachelor’s program, I’m fortunate in interacting with students all through their FIDM careers. That for me is an exceptional experience, as I see students develop and grow from their first day in the school, right through to graduation as Bachelors of Science.

Can you describe a favorite project?
I’m always impressed with the Statistics projects our students develop in the Business program. Essentially, students get to choose a topic to investigate that relates to a personal project. Students go and survey people to test their hypothesis out. It’s a great learning experience because they have a stake.

Larry Spears is an Outstanding Faculty Award Winner, an award given by the student body to outstanding faculty members.
