I love seeing the sunshine of comprehension in my students’ eyes and hearing their comments of appreciation for getting them to learn more than they ever thought possible.”
Industry consultant John Swiatek does group development, styles and trends, for brands like Oscar de la Renta, Calvin Klein, Geoffrey Beene, John Anthony, and Jeffrey Banks. Half of his career was spent on Seventh Avenue in New York, developing silhouettes/first garments from sketch through initial fittings and runway.
What is your teaching philosophy?
I try to be as demanding in the classroom as my experience was as a student at Parsons, and as demanding as the industry professionals who I worked with in New York for 24 years.
Do you have a favorite class project?
In the Collection Development class (DESN 2700) students develop 20 sketches and technical flats. In the process they learn to see the interrelationship of all the sportswear pieces instead of 20 disparate items. Then, they must produce first samples of garment designs as seen in the sketch.
What classes do you teach?
Introduction to Drafting, Second Year Capstone Pattern Drafting for Fashion Design, Advanced Fashion Knitwear courses.
John Swiatek is an Outstanding Faculty Award Winner, an award given by the student body to outstanding faculty members.
