Merchandise Marketing

Tell us a bit about yourself: Since I was a little girl, fashion has been in my blood. When I was little I played dress up with my friends and pretend to be in runway shows. I changed my outfits constantly until I found the perfect one. This was a ritual every weekend that I would look forward to because going to a private school and wearing uniforms cramped my fashion style. On weekends, I would take advantage and dress up for both night and day. Fashion to me is something that is shown everywhere and everyday, and will always be a part of who I am. I have dreamt of being in fashion all my life, and when I found FIDM I knew it was the place for me. I was so excited to be accepted early into my dream school and looking forward to being able to attend FIDM next year.

Having the opportunity to attend FIDM will give me the chance to show my inner fashion sense and accomplish the goals I have set going into my major of Merchandise Marketing.

What are your proudest accomplishments so far? One of my proudest accomplishments so far is being accepted a whole year early into FIDM, my dream school. My most recent accomplishment is curating a small boutique within a local salon in Phoenix, Arizona. Becoming the curator and buyer of Elle Holinger for Park Avenue Boutique has shown me that dreams do come true. By working hard, you can accomplish any goal you set for yourself.

Tell us all about this boutique opportunity: I have been going to Park Avenue Blow Dry Bar for years. The owner of the salon, Holli Christensen, has always wanted to open a small boutique in the front. When she found out that I was accepted early into FIDM and wanted to do Merchandise Marketing, she offered me the opportunity to be the curator and buyer for the boutique! From setting up floor plans to determining our price point and figuring out what we will be selling, we came up with an affordable look of clothes, handbags, jewelry, scarves, glasses, and much more. This has been such an incredible experience. We went on buying trips to LA and purchased our lines from different vendors, our major line being Dex. We have had many great successes and have met all our goals. The boutique has been open for a few months now, and with all of our hard work and time being put into the boutique, it has truly shown me that the amount of effort you put into something can produce such excitement and motivation to continue in the fashion world.

What made FIDM right for you? I knew that FIDM was the school for me because of the focus it had on the major I am pursuing, Merchandise Marketing, and it was in Los Angeles, one of my favorite places in California. With the amazing resources that FIDM has to offer, I know I can accomplish all the career goals I have.

Describe your entrance project: I created a book about my dream boutique, one which I would like to open one day, called Placard, meaning "closet" in French. In my entrance project, I describe the lines of clothes I would carry, including price points and demographic information. I know I will be able to accomplish this goal by attending FIDM. With such a dynamic campus, I know I will get all the help and encouragement I need.

What are your career goals? I hope to gain as much experience as I can in the fashion industry. I would like to experience all areas of fashion so that I understand what the consumer is searching for and how I can deliver it to them. Hopefully FIDM will help me to learn to network and gain knowledge to pursue my dream of owning my own boutique.

What do you expect to learn at FIDM? I expect to learn at FIDM techniques to become a successful business women and learn how to manage my own business. With all the tips, ideas, networking, and education I will get from FIDM, it will one day help me to open my boutique.
