FIDM Grad: Courtney McCrone

Grads share their career success stories

Courtney McCrone

Fashion Design

Fashion Design major Courtney McCrone has launched her own clothing line, 23 Skidoo, in her hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. The 2013 graduate's line of feminine, whimsical dresses, "handmade with love in Cleveland," can be found at About FIDM, she says, "This institution put a fire on my back to pursue my dream and make it a reality. I will always carry it in my heart."

How did you come up with the cute name? 23 Skidoo means "to be of high spirits," and I wanted to capture the spirit of Anywhere Adventurewear for young women with adventurous souls who want to look and feel feminine.

How did FIDM help you follow your passion for design? The best part was living in L.A., the land of opportunity. Being around so many artists was inspiring and an eye-opening experience. I always loved seeing other students' projects, and the different points of view. As a design college, FIDM attracts a wide range of cultures and the school itself was an inspiration for my clothing line.

Did you use the Career Center? My career counselor helped with all of my questions as I began to build my brand. I also did a couple of short internships with the designers at Fremont and Kittenhawk.

Tell us more about your brand. I call my followers "Skadettes" and I enjoy making their shopping experiences memorable. For the line's debut at the local Ingenuity Festival, my team and I built a teepee; we had records playing and chocolate chip cookies for anyone who liked us on Facebook. Now my online shop is launched, so anyone can become a Skadette!
