Merchandising & Marketing
Alexandra Thompson has been busy since graduating FIDM San Diego this year. The Merchandise Marketing major moved to Chicago to head up the women's division of Styleseek.com, a new e-commerce site featuring the first interactive relevance engine—an app that matches shoppers with personalized fashion recommendations. She took the time to tell us how she did it.
What does a Fashion Editor do? As the Women's Fashion Editor of StyleSeek, I oversee the women’s board. This includes managing the product assortment, acting as women's content editor, managing our social media accounts, and coordinating brand partnerships for collaborations. Also, I am happy to announce that we have recently launched a weekly personalized newsletter, each one unique to the 'StyleDNA' of each user.
Did you do internships at FIDM? I did, for StyleSeek! I started as a marketing intern, became a content contributor, and started a menswear blog while attending FIDM (StyleSeek was a solely a men’s site at this time). In my last quarter, I was hired on a freelance basis to start the build-out of the women’s division. The day after my program ended, I started my full time position for the company. We launched the women’s site in 3 months!
Did you use the Career Center? Yes, to apply for my internship. One of my instructors (Joy Sprink) recommended me for the internship, where I worked with one of the co-founders of the company, Brian Hawkins, who is also an instructor at FIDM.
Any tips for FIDM students? Keep an open mind. Especially when pursuing a career, you never know what opportunities lie ahead!
How does your FIDM education come into play at your job? I would have never had the opportunity to pursue the internship, which ultimately led to my current position, without FIDM. I use so many of the lessons learned at FIDM on a daily basis, ranging from skills learned in Merchandise Buying and Trend Forecasting, to utilizing business know–how from my Entrepreneurship class. Ultimately, FIDM gave me the credibility to attain my current position.
