A collage color wheel study

Quick & Easy Color Wheel

In this color lesson, the teacher prepares batches of red, yellow, and blue dyes to use on white silk swatches. Using the three dyes, students mix nine secondary and tertiary colors, dye the swatches, and assemble a color wheel. Preparation and waiting time is necessary. Warm-up and follow-up activities are included.

  • Jacquard acid dyes in red, yellow, and blue
  • Vinegar
  • Various bowls, measuring cups, and spoons not used for food preparation
  • Plastic wrap

  • Facemask to be worn during mixing
  • White silk
  • Eyedroppers
  • Small plastic cups (12 per student)
  • Hot water
  • Plastic sandwich bags that seal (12 per student)
  • Scissors
  • Paper
  • Double-sided tape
