Pssst – Don’t tell anyone, but as much as I thought I was going to dread seeing this film, I really enjoyed it!
The animals at the Franklin Park Zoo love their kindhearted caretaker, Griffin Keyes, but Griffin’s on-again/off-again girlfriend makes him decide to leave the zoo and find a more glamorous job. To keep Griffin from leaving, the animals decide to teach him the rules of courtship – animal style.
The role of Griffin is played brilliantly by Kevin James, and his onscreen love interest is Leslie Bibb, from the Iron Man films. Herein lies my only issue: how did this beautiful, self-absorbed fashionista ever meet a zookeeper, let alone decide to date him? Once I got past that, I began to enjoy myself. Especially when the animals started talking! The film features the voices of Cher, Nick Nolte, Adam Sandler, and Sylvester Stallone. Needless to say, Sandler’s character, Donald the Monkey, steals the show – he’s got thumbs! Another good reason to see this film is that the costumes were designed by FIDM Alumna Mona May. As difficult as it can be to dress a contemporary film, May does an excellent job showing the characters’ progression through the film… and she got to dress a gorilla.
