abc Around the World: The Grand Tour in Photo Albums xyz allows us the opportunity to do a little time-travel and live vicariously through people for whom travel was as much about the journey as it was about the destination. This book invites us to delve into the stories these albums tell, and to enjoy exotic locales and new sights from the comfort of our armchairs. This wonderful book features:

  • Beautifully reproduced album pages showcasing travelers photographs and ephemera
  • - Insightful text places the albums into historical context and highlights the diverse styles of the album-makers represented in the book
  • - Excellent source of photographic and graphic design inspiration; historic maps, photographs of monuments, architecture, and people from around the world
  • - Provides intimate and personal view into the travels of ordinary, sometimes anonymous, individuals through their own journaling and captions

abc Around the World xyz explores personal albums that were created by travelers at the turn of the 20th century. Levine and Jensen discuss the influence of new technologies (in transportation and the development of the personal camera) on how and why people traveled, and how they recorded what they experienced. The albums presented in this book capture the world at a unique moment in history, all framed through the personal experiences and thoughts of the travelers who compiled them.
