Carine Roitfeld: Irreverent is in many ways a memoir, reflecting upon one of the most storied careers in fashion publishing. Carine Roitfeld, former editor of Paris Vogue, is about to launch her own magazine called CR Fashion Book, scheduled to debut in September. Carine’s true gifts lie in her ability to style a fashion shoot or ad layout. In this regard, I believe she has no equal, with the possible exception of Vogue creative director, Grace Coddington. The pages of this beautiful book are like a scrapbook, with Carine’s styling tips and tricks on the side notes. For example, Roitfeld is a fan of putting opposites together such as grunge and couture. In a famous photo shoot with Christy Turlington, she matched punk with Chanel. Turlington wore a Chanel bag around her neck so that the chain handle resembled a punk style necklace.
Roitfeld uses Irreverent to describe the things that have become near and dear to her over her long and illustrious career. One of these is her long-standing relationship with the model Lara Stone. Their relationship has proven to be a long and fruitful one, with Roitfeld utilizing Stone again and again. Sometimes Roitfeld is inspired by what she sees every day, such as the iconic photo shoot she did with a model dressed to look like Vogue editor Anna Wintour, complete with Tom Ford sunglasses. The book is richly photographed and is the perfect coffee table book. Irreverent is a must for all fashion lovers and budding stylists.
