The magazine HOW can be found alongside several other graphic design publications that the FIDM Library carries. HOW started as a magazine, but has since branched out and installed itself more as a design brand. They host conferences, offer online classes, and upkeep a series of blogs. This range of knowledge and devotion to the craft plays into the content of their bi-monthly publication.
While some graphic design publications might be more visually stimulating, HOW appeals to the mind of the designer, rather than the eye. In recent issues they have covered: how to talk to clients, web design, team productivity advice, in–house strategies, and the future of type. On top of it’s more technically driven content, HOW frequently showcases award-winning designs, upcoming artists, and creative team profiles. An editorial from a past issue on the "Fads & Fashions" of type was particularly interesting. It explored theories behind typographic trends and shared the opinions of industry leaders on current movements. The writing staff at HOW is experienced and knowledgeable, and their articles would be useful for those in all fields of design.
