The following are the required courses for this major. Students meet with the Education Department to create a personalized academic plan. Transfer credits, placement tests, changes in curriculum, and other factors help determine which courses must be taken prior to graduation.

A course designed to explore a selected area of specialization in the commercial design field. Students develop a complex design project. Prerequisite: Admission to Advanced Study Interior Design Specialties Program
INTD 3350Lighting Design IIUnits: 3This course explores both the technical and aesthetic principles of lighting design for commercial applications. Research into new products and technologies is addressed. Prerequisite: Admission to Advanced Study Interior Design Specialties Program
INTD 3580Fundamentals of Product DesignUnits: 3A course in which students experience the process of developing tangible interior design products. Beginning with abstract conceptualization of a design, students work through the design process to produce sketches, detail drawings, and models, culminating in a formal presentation. Prerequisite: Admission to Advanced Study Interior Design Specialties Program
INTD 3640Lighting Fixture DesignUnits: 3This course offers a brief history and survey of current trends in fixture design with insights into the technical and aesthetic differences for task and ambient lighting and the inspiration and manufacturing of ideas and forms. Students apply these principles to lighting fixture design in the form of sketches, models, and a final presentation of one fixture. Prerequisite: Admission to Advanced Study Interior Design Specialties Program
INTD 3700Furniture DesignUnits: 3A study and exploration of furniture design as an expression of art, sculpture, fulfillment of human requirements, and style. Students are introduced to furniture design and detailing through practical demonstration. Various materials and techniques utilized in the process of furniture design are explored. Prerequisite: INTD 1090C
INTD 3860Marketing StrategiesUnits: 3Examination of marketing strategy as it applies to custom designed furniture and interior products. Exploration of market trends, advertising strategies, distribution channels, consumer attitudes, and licensing agreements. Prerequisite: Admission to Advanced Study Interior Design Specialties Program
INTD 4000Fundamentals of Kitchen & Bath DesignUnits: 3A detailed course focusing on the process of design for kitchens and baths. Students learn to incorporate the standards developed by NKBA (National Kitchen & Bath Association). Prerequisite: Admission to Advanced Study Interior Design Specialties Program
INTD 4100ABuilding Construction & Codes IUnits: 3Students learn and apply residential construction techniques and code requirements necessary to develop and execute kitchen and bath plans. Prerequisite: Admission to Advanced Study Interior Design Specialties Program
INTD 4100BBuilding Construction & Codes IIUnits: 3Students learn and apply commercial construction techniques and code requirements necessary to develop and execute a commercial design project. Prerequisite: Admission to Advanced Study Interior Design Specialties Program
INTD 4200Sourcing for the Kitchen & BathUnits: 3In field trips and classroom study, students research and source all component parts of a kitchen and bath project, including hardware, appliances, and finish materials. Prerequisite: Admission to Advanced Study Interior Design Specialties Program
INTD 4660Special Topics IUnits: 6This course enables the students to pursue individual interests in depth, as appropriate to support and execute the residential design project. Prerequisite: Admission to Advanced Study Interior Design Specialties Program

TEXT 1850Surface Design for Interior ApplicationsUnits: 3This studio course specializes in the principles of textile design as they relate to home furnishing fabrication, wall coverings, and other interior related products. Prerequisites: TEXT 1350, TEXT 1550
