Broad Museum Visit: Cindy Sherman Show Explores Being Female in Photos

Long before there were selfies or the Kardashians, the artist Cindy Sherman made taking pictures of herself her favorite form of expression. Working in her photo studio on pre-digital film, art student Sherman re-imagined herself as a beauty queen, a teen model, film noir heroine, and more. The same obsession that started in the 1970s has taken her to the heights of fame in the art world. The current show at downtown's Broad Museum brings together 120 of her works—from fake Mademoiselle cover girl to over-the-hill movie queen and grotesque circus clowns—in the first special exhibition to be held in the beehive-like art space.

At the museum, download the free app to get a guided audio tour with commentary of the provocative imagery from popular actors and directors. Aside to FIDM Students: Sherman does it all herself—costume, hair, makeup, backgrounds and props. And she is the model and photographer! This one predates Gaga!

Cindy Sherman: Imitation of Life is on exhibit at the Broad Museum, at 2nd and Grand Avenue, closes October 2. Admission to the exhibit is $12 including the permanent collections; reservations can be made online.
