Industry Expo

FIDM Students and Alumni meet and mingle with top industry professionals.

It’s an important information-gathering occasion and networking opportunity.” – career center advisor eliza kitsinian

Industry Expo is different from other Career Center events because it is a casual setting for both current students and graduates to meet and greet employers and corporate representatives from major companies. Employers can share information about their companies, as well as collect résumés from students and grads to keep on file for potential job openings.

“It’s an important information-gathering occasion and networking opportunity,“ says FIDM Career Advisor Eliza Kitsinian of the event, which has grown considerably since the first Industry Expo in 1999. Dozens of companies attend, from manufacturing and graphic design businesses, to apparel and interior design companies. Among the businesses that participate are:

  • TJX Discount Retailers (TJ Maxx, Marshall's, HomeGoods)
  • 24 Seven Staffing
  • American Apparel
  • Room and Board
  • First2Print
  • bebe
  • Sheraton Hotels

FIDM Open Portfolio Day

Recent grads let their work do all the talking.

Employers come to this event ready to hire our recent graduates.”– Career Center Director of Operations Ray Gallego

Employers have a chance to see, firsthand, the talent emerging from FIDM when they attend Open Portfolio Day, where the work of recent grads is showcased. With the help of Career Center Advisors, employers can inquire about these graduates, and in some cases, schedule interviews and make job offers, based solely on the portfolios each graduate prepared while a student at FIDM.

Over 100 portfolios are on display, representing student work from almost every major. Since the graduates are not present, their work must truly speak for itself, and the number of resumes employers take away is an indication that it does!

“Employers come to this event ready to hire our recent graduates,” says Career Center Director of Operations, Ray Gallego. “We've had recent grads get hired on the very same day!” Countless companies have visited the campus over the years, including:

  • Nike
  • Lane Bryant
  • Ed Hardy
  • Nordstrom
  • BCBG
  • Forever 21

Job Fair

Leading retailers don’t waste any time. Brand new FIDM Students get hired right away!

Students working part-time and utilizing the skills they learn in their classes find our Job Fair very meaningful.”– EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF INDUSTRY RELATIONS, FIDM, SHARON RYAN

FIDM Job Fairs are unique from other hiring events because they are geared specifically towards new, as well as current, students who are interested in working while they attend school. Retailers come to FIDM because they know they’ll find what they’re looking for, and in some cases, make offers on the spot. And since working in retail is a great way to begin their career development, all FIDM Students, no matter what their major, can benefit from these Job Fairs.

Many of the industry’s best-known retailers show up for FIDM Job Fairs, from high-end designer labels and luxury brands to well-known department stores and specialty boutiques. Our FIDM Students have had opportunities to work in various retail positions for Michael Kors, Bloomingdale's, Old Navy, Forever 21, bebe, BCBG, Saks Fifth Avenue, and many more, all before they graduate

Career Connections

Current students meet some of FIDM’s most illustrious alumni for networking, advice - and ice cream.

FIDM has been amazing in providing all these services to make you successful.”– FIDM GRAD, OWNER, THE SUIT CLOSET, VANI KUMAR

Cool treats aren’t the only thing on students’ minds when they come to Career Connections-they want advice from FIDM Alumni, and there’s always plenty to go around.

Our graduates are happy to come back to campus and share their experiences, offer advice, and network with students from every major.

Since 1992, FIDM Grads have been returning to FIDM for Career Connections, and the event has gotten bigger each year. The day kicks off with an alumni breakfast where grads catch up with old friends and mingle with other working alumni. Following the breakfast, students meet the grads for 15-minute segments of “speed networking,“ when they can exchange information, have questions answered, and get career advice. Graduates who have come back to participate in this exciting event include:

  • Fashion Designer and owner of Kevan Hall Designs, Kevan Hall
  • Project Runway stars–Nick Verreos, Kelli Martin, Daniel Franco, and Raymundo Baltazar
  • Costumer for So You Think You Can Dance, Suzy Magnin
  • West Coast Assistant for Allure magazine, Victoria Land

IMPD Industry Partnership Student Thesis Presentations

From Disney Princesses to PacSun board shorts, students are proud to show off collections they designed for major companies.

Each year, students in FIDM’s International Manufacturing & Product Development program collaborate with a company to produce a collection of apparel, accessories, or home goods. The nine-month partnership, which includes trips to Europe and Asia for research and trend shopping, ends with thesis presentations, where students are excited to reveal their collections and share the experience with family and friends.

The real-world experience and knowledge the students gain in the IMPD program is invaluable because they have an opportunity to work with some of the industry’s top companies, including Disney Store North America, PacSun, and The JCPenney Co. On the night of their thesis presentations, the students not only unveil their collections, but also are able to discuss the process of creating the collection, from concept to completion.
