How did your advisor help with the process? My advisors went above and beyond in helping me throughout the process. I was first introduced to Cathy; she was so nice about explaining everything to me as well as being flexible with meeting since I was working at the time. Both Cathy and Margaret had walked me through the applicant process so well and made sure that FIDM would be a great fit for me in what I wanted to pursue with my future. They also informed me all about FIDM and had answered all of my questions and more. They really motivated me and made me that much more excited about FIDM. I always felt I was able to call them with any questions and/or concerns I had.
Tell us a bit about yourself. Coming from a family of design, I have always had a creative side. My father is a designer; he’s designed some famous automobiles like the Aston Martin DB9 as well as the BMW Z8 seen in one of the James Bond movies. He also started his own company, Fisker Automotive, and designed the Fisker Karma, an electric sports car. I have always looked up to him and his passion for design, as he does not only design cars but also various other things like his newest project, a yacht. Straight out of high school, I made the decision to attend a college right away. I wasn’t passionate about the degree that I had been taking in my first year. I decided I didn’t want to stay at a school studying something that I didn’t absolutely love, so I left after completing my first year. I then went on to getting a job and an internship. This made me grow so much as a person. I learned so many new things and was exposed to real life work. I then moved on to another internship and another. I am a very hands-on person so this was a great way for me to learn and thrive. In this time, my confidence grew immensely, and I learned so much more about myself and what it is that I want and what my passions are. I love to complete tasks with creativity as well as complete them with the outmost diligence. I also am a risk-taker and like to switch things up at times and take chances. I enjoy trying new things whether it is food or a new activity or sport.
What are your proudest accomplishments so far? Deciding to leave school in order to work hard through several internships, then landing a full-time job for myself. Now I know what I am passionate about and am so beyond excited to learn more and study Visual Communications at FIDM.
What made FIDM right for you? I have known about FIDM for some time and have had quite an interest. When taking a closer look at FIDM and doing research on the Visual Communications degree, I instantly knew it would be a perfect fit for me. I also toured the LA campus, which made me so excited. It is placed right in the midst of everything, located in the center of Downtown LA. FIDM has so many great things to offer including such great networking opportunities. It gives students a chance to learn as well as be proactive with internship/job opportunities.
Describe your entrance project. For my entrance project, I created a board showing what the outside design of my store would be and showcasing the inside as well. I made the theme “LA Summer” keeping the board decorated in a fun, summer vibe, ranging from sunglasses cut out from a magazine to glamorous gold chains dangling in the front window. I also came up with some fun slogans for example on the front window I had put “hot couture” instead of “haute couture” since it is hot during summer time and the clothes would of course be chic and hot. I had also incorporated the triangle, square, circle assignment by drawing my name as if it was the Hollywood Sign in the hills. I had subtly thrown in the circle by making a sun and palm trees where the coconuts were the circles. The squares and triangles had also been thrown in understated fun ways as well.
What are your career goals? Goals and aspirations of mine are to complete my education at FIDM followed by a career that I genuinely enjoy as well as succeed in. I hope to one day own my own business or take over my father's business. My father owns a design company, so coming from a family of design allows me express myself creatively in many different ways.
What do you expect to learn at FIDM? I expect to gain more knowledge about visual communications and the specifics in the industry of fashion, marketing, and business. I cannot wait to start ideation sketching and develop sketching skills. Marketing and brand development is also something that I am so excited about because I have worked in marketing in the past. There are many different subjects and skills I still am looking to explore, one thing I know for certain is that the Visual Communications major will get me one step closer to where I want to be.
