Housing FAQ

How do I apply for FIDM Student Housing?

  • The best way to apply is via the FIDM Portal online application.
  • For manual applications, go to the Housing Application Form. Scroll to the bottom of the page and print out the PDF of the Housing Application Form. Complete the application and fax the documents with the payment information to the FIDM Student Housing Office.

How much does FIDM Student Housing cost?

  • Quarterly (10 weeks) housing fees are currently $2950*, plus an initial Placement Fee of $300. The total cost to reserve a space in FIDM Student Housing for the first quarter is $3250. (*subject to change annually)

Can I send the $300 placement fee and send the rest later?

  • A reservation cannot be confirmed unless ALL fees are paid at one time.

What does the cost of FIDM Student Housing include?

  • Quarterly housing fees include: rent, basic cable, furniture, utilities, and internet access. (Food, phone, and parking are not included.)

What are the options for payment?

  • Cashiers checks, money orders, wire transfers, or credit cards are accepted (Discover, Visa, MasterCard, American Express). No personal checks please.

Can I use Financial Aid to pay for my first quarter of housing?

  • Yes, but not for the first quarter. Your first Housing payment should be considered an "out-of-pocket" expense due to the fact that Housing fees have to be paid PRIOR to starting school and Financial Aid checks are distributed AFTER school begins.

When is the deadline date to cancel housing and receive a refund for the Housing fees?

  • Housing fees are neither refundable nor transferable provided that if, prior to matriculation the student determines not to attend FIDM, he/she may send a letter to FIDM requesting a refund of housing fees already paid. The FIDM Student Housing Office must receive said letter at least 30 days prior to the FIDM official check-in date. If such a letter is received by the appropriate deadline, a refund, less the $300.00 placement fee, will be made to the student.

Can I choose the property where I want to live?

  • As a first-time or “initial” applicant, you cannot request a specific property (i.e. Medici, Metropolitan, Park La Brea), but you can request which area you would like to live in (i.e. downtown, mid-city). Please understand that FIDM has to have the flexibility to assign spaces according to availability for the first quarter. In the following quarter, as a housing “renewal” applicant, you ARE able to request a specific property.

Are area and/or roommate requests guaranteed?

  • Although it is not guaranteed, it is always FIDM's goal to meet the student's request(s).

When will I be notified of my property/roommate assignment?

  • Assignment letters are e-mailed to students 3 weeks prior to the check-in date.
  • Due to the nature of FIDM Student Housing, exact addresses and roommate assignments are given at check-in and not any earlier.

What do I need to bring?

  • Since our properties are located near various shopping centers, many items that could be shared can be purchased after arrival, such as kitchen items, cleaning supplies, etc. If you prefer to prepare before your arrival, suggested essential items are listed below.
    • Bedroom: Linens for a regular twin-sized bed, pillow, blanket(s)
    • Kitchen: Personal dishes/glassware, utensils, pots and pans
    • Bathroom: Wash cloths, towels, personal items
    • Miscellaneous: Hangers, iron, alarm clock
    • Optional: Computer, computer lock, wireless router, stereo, vacuum cleaner
  • For a more specific list, see the "What to Bring" list (downloadable PDF) or the "Move-in" list located in the back of the Parent Orientation Guide.

Can I have my items shipped before I arrive?

  • You must coordinate your packages to arrive AFTER you have arrived! The apartment managers will not accept packages before you move in.

Is parking included in the Housing fees?

  • Parking is not included in your housing fees. FIDM has a limited number of parking spaces on each property - spaces are distributed to students on a first-come, first-served basis based on when the Housing application was completed. At the time of check-in, students will be notified if they have received a parking space assigned to them by FIDM.
  • If you are not a recipient of free parking on the property you will be given a list of additional parking options available in the surrounding areas. Please budget $75 - $225 a month for parking.

Once in Housing, am I able to remain in the same unit and with the same roommates?

  • FIDM's goal is to keep all students in their same units and with the same roommates, if no request to change has been made. Due to the nature of FIDM Student Housing, it may not be possible for a student to remain in the same unit/building each quarter.

Whom do I contact if I am unable to check-in during the scheduled move-in date & time?

  • You may move in later but not earlier. All late arrivals are required to make prior arrangements with Sonia Garza at 800.624.1200 ext.5624 or sgarza@fidm.edu.

When do I need to renew for future quarters?

  • WINTER 2010 – November 15, 2009
  • SPRING 2010 – February 15, 2010
  • SUMMER 2010 – May 15, 2010
  • FALL 2010 – August 15, 2010

  • Late renewals automatically forfeit their space.
  • A late renewal is considered for placement ONLY after everyone else has been assigned.

What are the consequences for renewing late?

  • The student automatically forfeits his/her current space and has a higher chance of being transferred to a different unit and/or building.
