
Instead of the assignment described below, you may submit artwork or projects you have already completed as long as it reflects your creativity and skills and is strong work that relates to your career interests. If in doubt, complete the project below.![]()

Fashion Design Exercise

Please submit ten (10) individual illustrations. Each should be on a separate sheet of paper. Use sketching paper or typing paper that measures 8.5" x 11". Two croquis (unclothed figure sketches) are available by to view in the PDF file. You may or may not choose to use them. To use, print the croquis, place it under the paper, and then sketch your ideas.
Portfolio Must Include:
- Two (2) evening wear designs
- Three (3) career designs
- Three (3) sportswear designs
- Two (2) other designs of your choice
Note: You may find inspiration for your ideas in the following: Current fashion magazines, daily newspapers, history or costume books, pattern drafting and draping books, and department stores or boutiques. (When looking in stores for inspiration, be aware of current silhouettes, how garments fit, skirt lengths and colors being shown.)
Try to understand what is happening in fashion and what direction fashion will take in the near future. Think about what would appeal to you. As we wish to evaluate your fashion awareness and creative abilities, your portfolio should reflect your interpretations of future fashion trends.
If you choose to color your illustrations you may use the following:
- Water color
- Pen and ink
- Felt tip pen
- Pastels
Remember: A neat presentation is always advantageous. All portfolios submitted to FIDM become the property of the college and will not be returned.
