FIDM Student Wins Kravet Award

Recent FIDM Interior Design graduate Gordon Hsing won the prestigious Kravet Award for Student Design 2001 for his ultra modern entry.

As part of the "Presentation Techniques" course at FIDM, students were asked to design a living room/dining room space after being given a floor plan. Their entries, along with hundreds of others from design students across the country, were then entered into the contest.

His renderings show a modern and sleek environment complete with chaise lounges, mid-century furniture and floor-to-ceiling glass windows. The mountain view, use of water and greenery gave the viewer a sense of bringing the outdoors in."Half of the pool was inside the house and half was outside," explains Gordon. "The house is with nature."

Kravet is a leader in the home décor industry and the award was presented by House & Garden magazine. "Gordon was flown to New York with a guest and honored at the reception," explains Dina Morgan, chair of the Interior Design program at FIDM. "He was given tours of the headquarters and it was just a wonderful event."

In addition to the weekend in New York City, Gordon received a $500 cash prize, a special reception and the chance to meet with respected designers and magazine editors. "I was very surprised," says Gordon, who is currently working at the design company Bulthaup and plans to continue in the interior design field. He graduated in March 2002 from FIDM.
