Terrace
and Pavilion
Albert Janz, Designer
Henry Johnstone & Company
Pasadena, California
The terrace has been designed as a topiary garden with various sizes of terra
cotta pots. It is a place for lounging on the hand-carved redwood chaises,
cushioned in the laminated ladybug tapestry. The lower terrace has a tented
pavilion for drinks and conversation.
The painted canvas interior walls are faux paneled to set the garden theme where the mouldings grow into oak branches populated by birds, squirrels and bugs. The floor has been painted with a formal rug. The hand-carved redwood furniture echoes the woodsy theme. The furniture of iron, stone, and painted wood gives an air of casual comfort.
The study is a well-edited mix of materials, finishes, and soothing neutrals, illuminated with dramatic and diffuse lighting. Applied moulding creates a paneled background for a collection of Asian and African masks.

A writing desk sits near the window, an antique Chinese armoire holds a stereo
and books. A comfortable chair and ottoman occupy the library niche beneath
a Fortuny chandelier and near the large round mirror. Both a sisal and an
aged area rug warm the original hardwood floor.
