Petrol Ad Agency Fuels Entertainment Marketing Course at FIDM

Whether it's for movies such as United 93, See No Evil, and The Longest Yard or games like BLACK and Resident Evil 4, Los Angeles-based agency Petrol has consistently been on the bleeding edge of advertising and marketing for entertainment companies. Their "Be Bold" philosophy has resulted in a wealth of powerful, in-your-face print and interactive projects and a long list of prestigious industry awards, including several gold and silver PROMAX/MI6 Game Marketing Awards. Now Petrol's top execs are bringing their full-throttle approach to creativity into the classroom for a highly anticipated Entertainment Marketing course available exclusively to students in FIDM's Graphic Design Program.

The course, a result of collaboration between FIDM and Petrol, puts theory to the test in real time. "We've built the course curriculum to include a focus on real projects with creative briefs and deliverables," says Petrol's Vice President, Toby Blue. "We can prepare the students for practical, everyday challenges so that they are better equipped to anticipate and address them when they occur. Everything we're teaching this quarter has real world application firmly in hand."

Stephen Reaves, FIDM's Director of Graphic Design, explains, "At FIDM we are always looking for innovative ways to give our students the real world experience that is so valuable to them and an integral part of an education at FIDM." He continued, "In a sense, this class is quid pro quo. Students can learn from the agency, and the agency also has the opportunity to essentially interview potential interns in a classroom environment."

Mr. Blue concurs, "We have had the great benefit of hosting a number of FIDM Students in internships throughout the years and, sometimes, that segues nicely into full-time employment-five of our current employees are FIDM Graduates.  An internship is the opportunity for us to 'sample' students and, conversely, for students to have an ability to see what we do in an environment that is charged, inspired, and has a lot at stake."
