Debra LaSpina Goldwater

Unveiling a Unique Career

Like many FIDM graduates, Debra LaSpina Goldwater used her FIDM degree to create a truly unique career. Debra is the owner of Dori Anne Veils, a business that creates custom bridal hats and veils. Her business also specializes in custom alterations for bridal gowns.

Debra's attraction to sewing and design began in her childhood. Her grandmother was a seamstresses who sewed until she was 100. Her mother, also a seamstress, designed and created custom bridal hats and veils.

Growing up in this environment inspired Debra and created a passion for costumes and sewing. Her passion led her to FIDM.

Debra enrolled at FIDM, San Francisco in 1975 and, of course, excelled at costume design. Upon graduating with a degree in fashion design, FIDM helped her land a job with the San Francisco Opera Guild, designing and creating costumes. She also worked as a wardrobe assistant for the Oakland Ballet.

In 1988 Debra's career changed direction when she took a job with Holiday Bridal, providing brides with custom tailoring and original head pieces. Debra had always had the philosophy that a wedding is like the theatre, with the bride as the star, so the transition into her new career was an easy one.

Her new position was exciting, especially when she had the opportunity to rework vintage gowns that had been handed down for generations. She enjoyed working with Holiday Bridal for 10 years until they closed their doors this February.

Debra viewed this as an opportunity to open her own business, Dori Anne Veils, named after her daughter. She continues to provide custom tailoring and head pieces to brides, but now offers a personalized bridal buying service as well. Debra is currently enjoying the freedom that comes with owning her own business and continues to make every bride feel like a star.
