Robin Sacco
Fashion is her passion
Robin Sacco is an Apparel Manufacturing student who is one quarter away from graduating from FIDM's night program. She has managed to maintain a 3.4 g.p.a. while working full-time. Currently she is a media buyer for Ronco Industries, buying national and regional cable media.
Oddly enough, her career decisions have been based, in part, on the results of a predictive career survey she took while attending college. "Back in the dark ages, when I was attending California State University Fullerton, I took a career test based on my aptitude and interest. At the bottom of the print-out it suggested two careers, media buying and Fashion Design." Robin has been a media buyer for thirteen years and has been attending FIDM for almost two years. She waited to attend FIDM until she could afford to fund her own endeavors. "I've always been fascinated with clothing, the material, the color, and especially the fit. I believe that people can gain self-confidence in the right outfit and I want to make that right outfit happen."
She chose her major because she thought it had a very well rounded curriculum that would adequately prepare her to work in the fashion industry. "The duality of the Apparel Manufacturing program at FIDM appealed to me because it is like getting an Associates degree in fashion design and an MBA simultaneously." The night program allows her the flexibility she needs to work full-time while obtaining her education. She has been able to balance her career, work, and personal life by being disciplined and managing her time effectively. "My social life suffers from time to time, but I know it is just a temporary sacrifice and the benefits of meeting my ultimate goal will be well worth sketching dresses on Friday nights."
Advice Robin has for potential night students: "Keep up with your studies and don't fall behind, because there's a lot more to the fashion industry then meets the eye. Textiles, international business, pattern making, North American Free Trade Agreement, and draping are just a portion of the curriculum that you need to learn. You need to be disciplined to deal with your responsibilities and studies. Don't forget to have fun. You should enjoy learning about something you love. Fashion should be your passion. I love learning new subjects. I believe every individual can accomplish a great deal if they try hard enough."
Robin is a very articulate, enterprising, and outgoing young woman from whom we expect to see great accomplishments. She would like to someday develop a line of petite women's clothing. "Over fifty percent of the women in the world are under 5' 4". I want to make clothes for them that fit without having to be tailored, that don't look like evening gowns, and that don't make petite women look like mermaids." She would also like to donate a portion of her company's profits to child abuse victims. "It is important to make a contribution back to the community and children hold a special place in my heart. I think I was fortunate to grow up in a supportive family environment and would like to extend a helping hand to those who aren't as lucky."
